Poor students have less time with teachers, fewer learning materials and lower learning outcomes. We fund organizations that provide both primary and secondary education directly to the poor. We look for affordable solutions that provide rigorous learning solutions targeted at the poorest children.
mothers2mothers uses “Mentor Mothers” – HIV+ moms – to teach HIV+ mothers-to-be how to assure that babies arrive into the world free of HIV – and stay that way. Peer-to-peer support has proven one of the most successful ways to prevent mother-to-fetus HIV transmission, and now m2m is adapting their model to achieve family health beyond pregnancy and birth. Moreover, m2m is serious about scaling up success: they are teaching other organizations – ministries of health and big NGOs – how to adapt and use the model in their own settings. Today, 1 in 4 HIV+ women who deliver in m2m’s seven countries of operation receive education and support from a Mentor Mother.
Living Goods creates an Avon Lady-like network of women going door-to-door selling health products, doing health education and making clinic referrals and they’ve reduced child mortality by 27% in East African communities where they work. Living Goods’ village based health entrepreneurs deliver dramatically better health outcomes at lower cost. Their approach blends best practices from business and public health: Agent financial incentives are aligned with better health outcomes, and efficient inventory management ensures they have the medicines their customers need at a price they can afford.
The Mulago Foundation, founded in 1993, funds organizations addressing a basic need of the very poor. Obsessed with impact, Mulago gives money to organizations that have a scalable solution and a team that can deliver. They look for lasting impact, cost-effectiveness, and strong growth potential.
