Record breaking heavy rain hit the prefectures of Kumamoto and Kagoshima in the southern Japanese island of Kyushu on 4 July 2020 and caused flooding and landslides.
As of 9 July 2020, over 60 people are confirmed dead and approximately a dozen are reported missing. A number of communities were cut off due to severed roads, among other damage. Approximately 4,700 buildings have been destroyed, damaged or flooded.
