Iglesia Bautista West Brownsville
For 850+ days in a row, the pastor and people of this church have served migrants entering the US at Brownsville, TX by providing food, clothing, hygiene kits and other items. The migrants are asylum seekers from all over the world but mostly from the “Northern Triangle” countries of Central America, Venezuela and, as of last week, Ukraine. (scroll down for recent updates)
- September 2023 Update. My wife and I are leading another team next month to feed stranded migrants, care for migrants passing through the intake center and help organize donated truck loads of humanitarian relief items. The crisis may be out of the news but shows no signs of lessening.
- December 2022 Update: The volumes of migrants entering the US has risen from 1000 migrants per week to over 700 per day. US Border Control officials have advised them to expect that to go even higher, perhaps as high as 2,500 migrants per day!
- Oct 2022 Update: We just returned from taking a small team of people to work alongside this organization. We served large groups of migrants from Haiti, Venezuela and Nicaragua as well as smaller groups from Guatemala and Honduras.
- Dec 2022 Update: Pastor Carlos Navarro advises that they are once again seeing very large groups released averaging 700 to 800 migrants per day. In addition, their respite center which can hold up to 16 people (mostly families with young children referred to them directly by Border Patrol) has been full nearly every day. Stranded migrants are swelling the ranks of the homeless in downtown Brownsville with more than 300 sleeping in the streets as of Dec 10, 2022.
- Feb 2023 Update: The team is now assisting migrants at 3 different sites. Bus Station, Market Plaza and the Gateway Bridge. Their respite center remains full every night and they are waiting for a surge of Title 42 migrants to arrive in the coming weeks.
