Heavy rains in the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu have flooded Thiruvanamalai, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore and Chennai, affecting 1.8 million people with an official death toll of 188. Rains are expected to continue for the next four days. Essential services including power, public transport, and food to the city have been cut off and schools are closed for the 17th day.
AID Volunteers (News: Citizens take lead in rain relief) at the grassroots level quickly organized themselves and are working in cooperation with several other NGOs and the government on immediate relief.AID and its partners will take up reconstruction of homes in the rural areas that have been severely damaged by the floods.
