The Amazon is currently facing record-breaking wildfires with the number of fires in Brazil being 80% higher than last year. More than half are in the Amazon region, spelling disaster for the local environment and ecology. Two states in the Amazon have already declared state of emergency: Acre and Amazonas. Brazil's environmental agency IBAMA is hiring hundreds of temporary firefighters to help fight the fires.

Earth Day is celebrated each year on April 22nd, marking the anniversary of the modern environmental movement. Earth Day is marked by more than a billion people annually as a day of action toward a cleaner environment and the fight against climate change. The Sustainability@VMware Fund will always provide a curated list of nonprofits that tackle critical dimensions of sustainability and conservation with their global projects. We intend to uphold that mission statement while rotating the specific nonprofits in order to capture moments of community engagement during Earth month or other company-wide sustainability awareness campaigns. Feel free to bookmark this fund! In this launch, we hope to provide an access point to anyone who would like to donate towards sustainability, but is overwhelmed by the diversity of issues and number of nonprofits. These four nonprofits were chosen by surveying the Atlanta and Palo Alto Sustainability Ambassadors. Each nonprofit works globally on issues that affect us all and have been vetted by Sustainability in the Office of the CTO. We’ve known for a long time that the balance of nature has been disrupted. This disruption has resulted in the greatest rate of extinction since the loss of dinosaurs more than 60 million years ago. This year join us in supporting the Earth Day 2019 - Protect Our Species Fund, which comprises organizations that aim to slow the rate of extinction and protect threatened and endangered species. These organizations focus on everything from protecting endangered species to pushing for policy changes that position the best interests of the environment and biodiversity as priorities.
